Andrés Segovia
International Guitar Competition

November 2007

In 1922, Andrés Segovia was first introduced to La Herradura by Francisco Prieto-Moreno, a well known benefactor of the area. They met at the Flamenco Song Festival organised in Granada by Manuel de Falla and Federico García Lorca. Andrés Segovia immediately fell in love with the area and decided to build a house on the Punta de la Mona 'Los Olivos' which he and his family visited regularly up until his death in 1987.

His local popularity soon became so great that, in an extraordinary town hall meeting, he was made adoptive son of the municipality and the seafront paseo in La Herradura was renamed the 'Paseo Marítimo de Andrés Segovia'. In the same meeting it was voted to create the 'Andrés Segovia Award' in recognition of the importance of the Spanish guitar.

Segovia accepted the proposal on the condition that the competition demand the highest quality of musical ability from its participants.

Since 1985, this prestigious competition has taken place every January in La Herradura, where it was held in the church. It now lasts for five days and attracts a wide variety of talented young musicians under 35 from all over the world, due to its prestige and also high prize money!

As of 2006 the competition has moved to La Herradura's new municipal auditorium and has changed its dates to late November.
